Storm Ivo is sweeping across Spain, bringing high winds, heavy seas and snowfall. Yellow and amber weather warnings are in place for much of the country, with a red warning issued for the Cantabrian coast. Meanwhile, the Canary Islands are also experiencing stormy conditions, with coastal winds of up to 61km/h forecast.

Weather warnings remain in place for both the Canary Islands and Spain this week as the Spanish destinations continue to face stormy conditions. Yellow alerts, issued by Aemet , Spain 's national weather agency, are still in force for the Canary Islands , a popular winter sun destination among Brits. Coastal warnings are in place for El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote with coastal winds of up to 61km/h forecast today, Wednesday January 29.

It comes after the government declared a state of pre-alert for ‘coastal phenomena’ at the start of the week, with ‘bad sea conditions’ expected over the coming days. There are also yellow warnings in place for wind gusts of up to 70km/h for La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and Tenerife until Friday. Meanwhile mainland Spain is feeling the effects of Storm Ivo, which is moving across France. Yellow warnings are in force for the north coast today with sea swells of up to five metres forecast and some force nine winds (87km/h). On Thursday, Aemet increased the warnings on the north coast to amber with sea swells of up to seven metres and strong winds. A red warning will come into force for the Cantabrian coast, which includes the city of Santander. Yellow and amber alerts for snowfall are also in force for some mountainous regions. Predicting the weather for mainland Spain for Thursday, forecasters said: “Strong winds and very strong gusts in the Cantabrian Sea, high areas of the northern half, the Strait, Alboran, Lower Ebro and the Canary Islands. “Persistent rainfall in the Cantabrian Mountains. Snowfall with significant accumulations in all the mountain systems of the Peninsula and its surroundings, especially in the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains.” Conditions are expected to improve in both the Canary Islands and mainland Spain by Friday, although as Storm Ivo moves across the Mediterranean the Balearics could experience some “strong showers and thunderstorms”. Forecasters said: “A stabilisation trend is expected in the Peninsula due to the entry of high pressures from the west of the peninsula, while in the Mediterranean, the storm Ivo, in transition to a low pressure, will cause locally strong showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the Balearic Islands, without ruling out showers in the eastern part of the peninsula.”
