'By far the most popular casual market is the ‘pre-loved’ market on a Thursday and the ‘flea’ market on a Sunday'
During a cabinet meeting members considered a report from Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Levelling Up, Councillor Mohammed Younis. The report outlined the options in providing facilities for casual market traders while work is under way for the £20m regeneration of Accrington Town Square projects, which include restoration of the Market Hall, Burtons Chambers and Market Chambers.
The officer recommendation is that cabinet consider agreeing to the purchase of 14 stalls as it would reduce the council’s capital outlay, reduce the revenue costs and a smaller number of stalls are more likely to be reused. The revenue cost to the authority would be £23,275 and the capital cost to the council would amount to £19,836 if 14 stalls were to be provided each day. If all 14 stalls were successfully hired it is expected to generate an income of £14,000 on each day.
Hire income is based on maintaining the council’s existing charge rate of £20 per stall per day. The council has relocated the leaseholder traders into temporary cabins on the town square or other commercial units in the town centre. The report reads: “By far the most popular casual market is the ‘pre-loved’ market on a Thursday and the ‘flea’ market on a Sunday.
