EXCLUSIVE: Olympian Sam Quek and husband Tom created a day to remember when they threw a stunning joint party for their two children, complete with zoo animals, bouncy castle and five tier cake
When guests arrived at the four-in-one celebration thrown by Strictly Come Dancing star Sam Quek for her two children in April this year, they might have assumed the jungle theme was a nod to her 2016 stint on I’m a Celebrity.
“We had about 150 there in the end - it was like a second wedding - but we decided to either go big or go home and it was brilliant.” “Even Molly had been hospitalised for a couple of days with a virus. We realised both families hadn’t been together to celebrate anything happy for a while so here was our chance. The plan clearly worked with close family and friends attending a Christening service at the nearby village church with a further 50 coming on to the celebration afterwards.
“I was buzzing the whole day. I felt proud of what we put together, proud of our family unit. We love hosting, even if it’s just watching the football in our house, so to do it on that scale with everyone we know and love was special.” “Every press shot the BBC has I am either heavily pregnant or just post-partum,” she laughed while Tom recalled turning up regularly to watch the filming of Question of Sport episodes to help with his wife’s pregnancy sickness.
“When you’re an elite athlete you can’t let your emotions wander, they have to be contained. There is one job at hand and you have to be very results focused. She explained that often parents can feel alone in their experiences. Both Molly and Zac were born during Covid and in person ante-natal groups were not meeting.
With such a sporty mum - she still plays hockey at club level as well as squash and football - do either of the children show talent in that direction? Zac, meanwhile, is turning into a competent little driver, racing round the kitchen and leaning into bends like a pro in a minicar. “There might be some Formula One talent there!” laughed Tom.
“Everything at Christmas wound down and that was a real turn of fate because, as Tom said, it was a tough time. We were hit with a number of bereavements and I needed to be there for my family.
