Lincolnshire's Geoff Capes, widely regarded as Britain's finest shot-putter and a twice-crowned World's Strongest Man, has died at the age of 75. A family statement read: "The family of Geoffrey Capes would like to announce his sad passing today, 23rd October. Britain's finest shot-putter and twice world's strongest man."
He later resided in Stoke Rochford near Grantham, living a slightly quieter life as he was famed for breeding budgerigars and had quite a lot of success, once a world champion, on the show bench. With a remarkable personal best shot put throw of 21.68m set in 1980—a record that remains unbroken—Capes was one of the most recognisable sports personalities in Britain during the 1970s and '80s. Olympic glory eluded him, but his strongman career flourished with two world titles and six top-three finishes, reports the Mirror.
