Students are being urged to get a number of jabs before they head to university this year. Universities can be “hotspots” for infection, health officials said as they urged students to make sure they are up to date with their routine childhood vaccines ahead of the new term.
Students are being asked to check they are up to date with a number of jabs, including vaccines that protect against a number of strains of meningitis; the jab that protects against measles, mumps and rubella; and the HPV vaccine. Dr Shamez Ladhani, consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, said: “We usually see increases in cases of meningococcal meningitis after the university term starts in September.
