Global travel expert Lonely Planet has identified the top five celestial wonders and the best locations in the world to experience them, including one spot not far from Glasgow.

Where to watch: Lonely Planet said: "Galloway Forest Park. Initially established in 1947 to safeguard the picturesque countryside of southern Scotland, this park transitioned into a haven for nocturnal adventurers upon earning the title of Great Britain's first Dark Sky Park in 2009. Within its expansive 299 square miles, visitors are treated to a vast sky of darkness, free from the intrusion of light pollution.
"This meteor shower is notable for its bright, fast-moving meteors, with some leaving long-lasting trails across the sky. The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, with observations dating back over 2,600 years. Viewers can expect to see spectacles of light dusting the sky in the early hours of the morning."What is it? Lonely Planet said: "Named after the constellation Aquarius, from which they appear to radiate, the Eta Aquariids typically peak in early May.
