Old faces, new alliances, and familiar deals mingle at Logan’s goodbye party

made two smart choices this season: killing Logan off early and leaving his funeral until the penultimate episode. Since his death in, the Roy children have been fumbling and frowning, taking unresolved tension out on themselves and others. Their father’s funeral is a chance to express those feelings: a moving and alarming explosion which provides a necessary momentum for the series as it edges towards its end next week.

That does not stop a lot of people turning up for the funeral. Caroline makes a welcome return, at least for the audience, with her husband, Peter . She prompts the best moment of this episode: whisking Kerry towards the second row, along with another new face Sally-Anne. We learn that Kerry is to Marcia what Sally-Anne was to Caroline. The four of them, mistresses and wives, take a seat, breezing past an awkward moment to find a point of teary, warmhearted connection.

Shiv, desperate to impress and have a final word, also makes a stand. The point she’s trying to make – about Logan’s different treatment of her because she’s a woman – is the most compelling, but she makes it badly. “He couldn’t fit a whole woman in his head,” is a bonkers sentence to utter anywhere, but especially at a funeral.
