Elise, a 25-year-old, has been struggling with severe eating difficulties due to achalasia, a rare condition that affects the esophagus. Initially, doctors dismissed her symptoms as intolerance and IBS, leading to a delay in diagnosis. This caused her to lose a significant amount of weight and experience constant regurgitation. Now, she faces a long wait for a referral for a procedure that can help alleviate her symptoms.

It has made it “nearly impossible” for the 25-year-old to eat or drink normally, and Elise finds herself regurgitating food or being sick up to 60 times a day.'Super fit' mum died after docs dismissed tummy troubles as 'intolerance & IBS'- mainly consuming cereal soaked in milk and crisps - and as a result, she has dropped to 6st 10lb in weight.

When the results came back normal in January 2021, Elise was referred to a specialist but felt "let down" by a lack of communication.“All the while, my condition kept getting worse.“I still can't eat things like bread or pasta because it gets stuck, and I end up regurgitating it.“I’d wake up in the night for water and it would come straight back up.After going and back and forth with the doctor, Elise was referred to a different specialist in London in November 2024.

Food and drink therefore cannot pass into the stomach and becomes stuck. It is often brought back up. This can make it incredibly difficult to eat or drink. Swallowing then gets more painful over several years, to the point that it is sometimes impossible. The exact cause of achalasia is unknown, and there is no cure. But treatment, such as medicines, stretching, Botox and surgery, can help relieve the symptoms and make swallowing easier.Elsie has done lots of research and believes her best chance at eating "normally" again is undergoing a POEM procedure.

It involves cutting away muscle along the lining of the lower oesophagus - widening the space for food to pass into the stomach.“But it took years to get a diagnosis - I don't know how long this will take.“It affects every part of my life. I can’t go out for food and drinks with friends in case I’m sick, or I have to make sure I’m always near a bathroom.GREAT BRRRITAINGREAT BRRRITAIN
