Festive food lovers have been issued with a warning after Tesco, Aldi and other major supermarkets have been forced to urgently recall a range of Christmassy delights over fears they could be 'unsafe'. The causes for concern arise from issues including mislabelling or the potential inclusion of foreign objects. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has called for recalls on various other grounds, including undeclared allergens.
When a recall happens, the FSA provides advice on what actions shoppers should take and clarifies why products are being removed from shelves. Usually, getting your money back is easy, and a receipt might not even be asked for. Dunnes Stores has announced a recall for a series of its cheese varieties and cheese-based products. It's prompted by concerns Listeria monocytogenes might be present. According to the FSA, the cheeses involved have been produced by, or have ingredients sourced, from Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese in Ireland, and are available through Dunnes Stores in Northern Ireland. They include Dunnes Stores Wicklow Tomato and Herb Cheddar; Dunnes Stores Wicklow Nettle and Chive Cheddar; Dunnes Stores Wicklow Blue Brie; Simply Better Irish Brie Cheese and Cranberry Quiche; Simply Better Wicklow Ban in Ceramic Dish; Simply Better Double Cream Wicklow Ban; Simply Better Farmhouse Irish Cheese Selection; Simply Better and and Neven Maguire Cheese Selection. The FSA stated as to the reason behind the recalls: 'The possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the products listed above. Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea, reports The Mirror.
