Think we're in a kinder, fairer era of reality television? Think again

comes back to television after more than two decades away. If you’re not familiar, the clue is in the name: 18 contestants, split into two camps and stripped of all basic necessities , are marooned on a desert island, where they must learn to survive not only the elements, but also each other.

In the opening episode, it doesn’t take long for the claws to come out. After two days of starving thanks to losing the very first challenge , tensions begin to rise in the orange camp. “I’m thinking Shai,” says professional roller skater Tinuke, when asked who she is thinking of voting to send home. “He’s annoying! I don’t know if I can put up with him anymore”.“If I’m assessing value to the tribe,” says fitness instructor Nathan, “Richard’s quite low end.

Crucially, it didn’t feel nasty. Sure the contestants were accusing each other of being manipulative liars, but the perceived nastiness stayed within the confines of the programme. But the lines do blur. Unless you’ve been purposely burying your head in the sand, you’ll know that we’re almost four weeks into a reboot ofon ITV2.
