Potentially dangerous offenders such as domestic violence perpetrators could be released under Operation Early Dawn, lawyers have warned
The Government is making use of temporary measures to deal with a lack of capacity in the prison system, exacerbated by the jailing of hundreds of anti-immigration rioters Under Operation Early Dawn, at least 136 suspects who have been charged with a criminal offence and should have made their first appearance at a magistrates’ court on Monday were held back.
The solicitor said one of his clients being “held back” was accused of breaching his bail conditions for a previous offence. There are also wider worries about the potential for suspects who would have been arrested or remanded in custody ahead of their next appearance staying on the streets. Dean Groenewald, 32, was jailed for 26 months at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday after admitting one count of violent disorder at a previous hearing.
“He hopes that he will be able to find alternative employment in custody, depending upon the circumstances and prison he ultimately ends up being sent to. Prisons and probation minister Lord Timpson said: “As a result, we have been forced into making difficult but necessary decisions to keep it operating.
