Maisie Summers-Newton, a swimming champion, shares her memories of growing up in a rural village and her extraordinary achievements as she represents Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
Swimming hero Maisie Summers-Newton went from growing up in an "ordinary Northamptonshire village" to representing Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
"I love Wollaston. It’s quite a big village with lots of greenery and fresh air and a thriving community. It’s relaxing and not as hectic or busy as a town. I went to both primary and secondary schools here. "I’ve got used to it and it’s strange when I don’t do it. I also spend two days a week in the gym. I have the occasional day in the winter when the weather is cold and it’s dark getting up in the morning and coming home when I don’t want to get out of bed at that time in the morning.
"I’m blessed by my upbringing. I have never been treated any differently, even though I have a disability. I have two able-bodied sisters. I swim in an integrated club where I am always treated exactly the same." “For someone to have come from a normal background in the village, to have gone to normal schools, I am very proud of what I have achieved.
"Friends and neighbours in the village threw a massive watch party and a large homecoming event on my return, which was lovely.
