While most major Australian cities are expected to see petrol price increases over the Christmas period, Sydney will buck the trend with falling fuel costs. The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) predicts higher prices in Brisbane and Melbourne, while Canberra will remain stable despite having the highest petrol prices among major cities. The NRMA expressed concern over the slow pace of the price fall in Sydney, urging oil companies to address the issue.
Sydney will be the only major city in the country that will see petrol prices fall during the Christmas period.The National Roads and Motorists' Association has forecast that most major cities in Australia will see petrol prices rise over the Christmas period.
Its forecast issued today came after petrol prices in Sydney reached a high of 200.6 cents per litre earlier this month — compared to a current average of about 189.1 cents per litre."It's pleasing the cycle is falling in Sydney, what's less pleasing is that those falls are happening at a snail's pace at two-thirds of a cent per day — the oil companies must fix this now," NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury said.
"Retail petrol prices also move up and down in regular patterns in major cities. This pattern is known as a petrol price cycle and is a result of pricing decisions made by various petrol retailers. But increasing fuel prices are not specific to those cities, with Perth expected to see prices peak at 196 cents.
"For those receiving income support, higher fuel prices mean tougher decisions about essentials," ACOSS acting CEO Edwina MacDonald said.
