A major storm is currently hitting the Illawarra and Sydney regions, as Sydneysiders begin their commute home. Follow live.
While this storm is severe, it is not a distinct weather system. The Bureau of Meteorology says it’s just a lot of instability across the coast along with onshore easterly flow triggering the thunderstorms.
“Essentially, we do have a trough inland across New South Wales and that is likely to move eastwards and off the shore in the next 24 hours,” she said.“What is making this storm go on for so long is all the right features of a storm coming together,” she said. “The wind direction is right and the atmospheric conditions are right for the thunderstorm.”
“Because of the way Wollongong is orientated, it tends to act as a focal point for storms, they start thundering away and get caught from the coast,” the weather bureau said.Our colleagues at Nine News have this vision of flood-affected parts of the state.We’ve just heard that Sydney Airport is experiencing some delays due to the rather inclement weather.
Some buses have been rerouted to avoid flooded roads, while flooding has also been reported in parts of the Royal National Park.Footage shared in an Illawarra community Facebook group shows a car being swept through flooded waters out to the ocean.
