The superstar mammal of the Tasman peninsula, Neil the seal, is back and causing quite the stir. The juvenile southern elephant seal has captured hearts by returning year after year to a residential area on Tasmania’s southern coastline where he was born in October 2020 — when authorities believe his mother got lost on her way to the nearest seal colony on Macquarie Island. Neil is well known for his love of orange traffic cones, street signs and surprising local residents at their front doors.
” Wildlife experts have implored people to keep Neil’s location a secret, and not to share his location — especially via social media — if he is spotted. “In light of Neil’s social media popularity, resulting in overwhelming numbers of people flocking to see and photograph this seal, it is important to stress that our natural interest in rare wildlife sightings and desire for interaction can lead to negative outcomes for wildlife,” Carlyon said.
