Emergency services rescued two people from submerged car

A teenager died after a car plunged into a pit of water at a sewage treatment works in West Yorkshire.

A Volkswagen Golf was found partly partly submerged in a pit of water at Wheldale Sewage Works off Wheldon Road in Castleford. Police were alerted to the incident at 6.19am today. Emergency services attended the location and found a white Volkswagen Golf had entered a water treatment facility and was partly submerged in a pit of water.

A man and a woman, both 21, were rescued from the vehicle and taken to hospital for further treatment. Both have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. An 18-year-old man from the Wakefield area was found a few yards away from the vehicle. He was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.The incident is being investigated by the Major Collision Enquiry Team, who are appealing for anyone who witnessed the vehicle travelling along Wheldon Road from the direction of Airedale immediately beforehand to contact them.The team can be contacted on 101, or by using the livechat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.
