The Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing to reduce the minimum age for driving a train on Britain's railways from 20 to 18 as early as this summer.

Lowering the minimum age to 18 would 'build resilience' and enable school leavers to take up apprenticeships and train to join the profession, the department added. 'These proposed changes will help us to recruit the next generation of drivers, lowering the average age of the workforce, and helping to ensure a resilient railway for our customers.'
