Tesco and Lidl have followed Aldi 's lead in increasing the price of a shopping essential. The cost of tea bags at Aldi and Sainsbury's has seen a rise recently, with both retailers raising the price of their cheapest 160 box of bags to £1.89 earlier this month.
This week, Lidl and Tesco have also increased their prices, with Tesco raising its Stockwell bags to 94p for a box of 80 and Lidl increasing the price of its 240-box of Knightsbridge Red Label Tea Bags to £2.79. This means that Tesco now charges £1.88 for 160, while Lidl charges £1.86. This comes after shoppers complained last week about high food bills when prices in the MEN's weekly comparison remained stagnant despite inflation falling to its lowest level in two-and-a-half years. Despite the increase, Lidl remains the cheapest for the basket of essentials this week - costing £12.11 for tea bags, milk, bread, butter, coffee, beans, chicken and mince.Morrisons, with a bill of £12.37, is the most expensive for the third consecutive week.
Aldi has contested the results of the weekly comparison, arguing that it does not consider like-for-like products or 'the higher quality' of its items. For instance, Aldi claims that their beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury's and that their teabags are 'better quality than the comparative products used', reports the Manchester Evening News.
Asda also takes issue with our comparison, stating that the small sample of products does not provide a comprehensive picture of prices and fails to account for its deals.
