When Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s returns to court over felony securities fraud charges he’s been facing for nearly a decade, it will put him the closest he’s ever been to standing trial in the case.

FILE - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton speaks at a news conference in Dallas on June 22, 2017. The Texas attorney general who survived a historic impeachment trial last year made a Super Tuesday primary a bitter Republican-on-Republican brawl, targeting the House speaker and dozens of other lawmakers who had sought his ouster. But there was no certainty the April trial was still on track.

Paxton is charged with two counts of securities fraud and one count of not being registered as an investment adviser. He has pleaded not guilty. The two securities fraud counts carry a potential sentence of up to 99 years in prison. The securities fraud case has hung over Paxton nearly his entire time in statewide office. Yet Paxton, 61, has shown remarkable political resilience, maintaining and growing strong support among GOP activists on the state and national level, including from former President Donald Trump.
