outlined plans on Wednesday to raise average annual water bills by 52 per cent, to £666.50 per customer by 2030.
A member of Take Back Water, a group organising a mass water bill boycott in October, from Stratford, east London, who has asked to be identified only as Will, said the planned bill rise was “a prime example of the Mike Keil, chief executive of the Consumer Council for Water, said that “very few” Thames Water’s customers felt their original planned increase of 44 per cent was affordable, adding: “Many people will be angry at the company’s call for a larger rise.
The company said the main driver of the business plan was “due to an update to our customer numbers which sees a customer reduction from our original plan”, as well as previously forecast increases in spending. The industry as a whole is facing various economic challenges including millions of pounds in fines for sewage outflows and flawed infrastructure.
An Ofwat spokesperson told the BBC it would carefully consider all responses to its proposals, which were required by midday on Wednesday.
