, Hyundai has finally launched its smallest SUV: the Exter. Made for developing markets, it debuts first in India where it’s positioned as the brand’s most affordable SUV.The first-ever Exter uses styling that’s commonplace in other Hyundai models such as the compound headlights. Meanwhile, the H-shaped LED graphics in the DRLs are new, and is expected to become a trademark feature of the brand’s future SUV offerings.

The Exter is ultra-compact. It competes in India’s sub-4-meter tax bracket and for that, measures in at just 3,815 mm long. It’s 1,710 mm wide and 1,631 mm wide. Its wheelbase, however, is a relatively generous 2,450 mm. Powering the Exter is a 1.2-liter Kappa normally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine. It makes 83 horsepower and 114 Nm of torque driving the front wheels. This powerplant can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated manual gearbox.In terms of platform, the Exter rides on the Hyundai K1 platform shared with the. Suspension-wise, the Exter doesn’t stray far from other offerings in the segment with its front MacPherson Struts and rear torsion beams.

Equipment wise, the Exter comes with a surprising long list of options. The top-spec variant has leather/fabric combination seats, digital instrument cluster, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, sunroof, automatic climate control with rear vents, and push-button engine start.

As for safety, it comes standard with 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control with hill start assist, and rear parking sensors. Higher-trim variants get a rear camera and tire pressure sensors.
