Some people who believe they have dementia really have a different condition, and the good news is that it can be cured

is one of the most feared medical conditions as it has no cure and usually progresses to the point where people need constant care.

But the chief hurdle to getting more people correctly diagnosed with FCD is that so few people have heard of it or understand it. It may be similar to the way that anyone can experience a memory problem if they momentarily “go blank” under pressure – like if you get flustered in a shop and can’t remember your bank card PIN number. This isn’t due to a structural deficit inside the brain, but could be seen as more like a psychological glitch.

FCD can often be triggered if someone starts to suspect their memory is getting worse, and becomes scared this is the onset of dementia. “It wouldn’t be typical for someone with Alzheimer’s to be able to have a detailed conversation with you about which other doctors they’ve seen, what medications they’ve tried, but when you test their memory, then they get a mind blank,” Dr Ball said.
