A new report warns that child poverty rates are set to remain high
More than half the children in parts of Greater Manchester are living in poverty, according to a new report.
It comes as the charity warns that economic growth alone will not cut child poverty. Using the Office for Budget Responsibility 's growth projections, the think tank found only Scotland will see child poverty rates fall by 2029 while five English regions will see a rise. After rejecting calls to scrap the two-child benefit cap last year, the new Labour government set up a child poverty taskforce. The cross-government group is due to publish its strategy setting out how to reduce and alleviate child poverty across the UK this spring.
“Policy action must start with the system designed to help people meet their costs of living – social security. At the moment that system is not only failing to do its job but, worse, actively pushing some people into deeper poverty, through cruel limits and caps.
