Local authorities are required to fund funerals if someone has no next of kin or if their family is unwilling or unable to pay for it
In the ongoing cost of living crisis families can find themselves unable to afford a funeral if a relative dies. Particularly in cases where the person who has died is young, and therefore made no provision to cover funeral costs, families are increasingly turning to fundraising websites to pay for a service but in some situations they are unable, or unwilling, to try to find the money.
Local councils don’t have any public health funeral guidance from the government, so each local authority has its own policy on what is and isn’t included. A public health funeral is usually a cremation. But if the person who passed away didn’t want to be cremated for personal or religious reasons the local authority must respect this.
An inquest concluded that his death was accidental with Assistant Coroner Louise Rae stating: "Steven lived a lifestyle where he perhaps hadn't taken care of himself particularly well. It is most likely that he had drunk excessively and that he had either fallen or staggered because he had been so intoxicated. It is likely that the effects of the alcohol caused him to bang his head in some way.
The funerals funded by Blackpool Council include those of individuals who were born elsewhere in the world such as Burnley, Australia, Swindon, Scotland, Ireland, Lancaster, Lytham, London, Liverpool, Manchester, Ormskirk and Colne. The youngest person whose funeral was paid for by the council was Marvin Dawson, 36, whose death is this week the subject of an inquest.
The local council might place a notice in a local newspaper or on their own website with the date and time of the service so that other people can attend. This is especially important if the person who died had no family, and friends would like to pay their respects.
