Attracting fewer visitors but boasting better weather and amazing beaches, this archipelago is perfect for those looking for an alternative to the Canary Islands
Thanks to their year-round sun, stunning beaches and short flight time, the Canary Islands are one of the top destinations for Brits when it comes to a holiday abroad. The Spanish islands have now been a firm favourite for generations, having experienced a tourism boom in the 1960s.
The islands gained independence from Portugal in 1975 but have a mixture of African and European culture - similar in a way to how the Canary Islands feel different to mainland Spain. Located further south in the Atlantic than the Canaries, Cape Verde enjoys warmer temperatures which rarely drop below 20C.
Similar to the Canaries, Cape Verde has some incredible beaches which could even rival those in the Caribbean. Santa Maria in Sal features a golden stretch of sand with colourful fishing boats dotted along the shore.
