“It was a unique experience, because I would see Carrie’s face on the front of a newspaper as I was being wigged to play her… That was quite sobering.”
While some of the locations may have been fudged , the plot of the show is very much rooted in reality. “It’s been incredibly well researched,” says Lovibond, who worked closely with Tim Shipman, politics editor atand a consultant on the drama, while preparing to play one of the most simultaneously high-profile and enigmatic women in Britain’s political sphere. “He knows Carrie,” she says, “so I was very keen to speak to him and get his insights – I took reams of notes.
Though Lovibond had watched along with the rest of the country as Carrie moved into the flat above 11 Downing Street with her then boyfriend Boris in the summer of 2019, she confesses to knowing little at the time about the PR guru who would ultimately become Johnson’s third wife.
Once she signed on for the project, Lovibond set about learning everything she could about her character. In addition to Shipman’s insights, “I spoke to some people who knew her when she was younger”, she says, but points out that, despite the countless column inches she’s inspired since her relationship with the Prime Minister became official, her public appearances are rare – and public remarks even rarer. “Certainly compared to Boris there is very little footage of her,” Lovibond says.
