Incredible women with an incredible legacy
Winckley Square in Preston is saturated in rich history that is often represented by the lives of the men who lived and worked there.
Her dedicated work helped welcome more than 3.5 million servicemen and women between 1915-1919 as they passed through the town when it became clear that there was a great demand at Preston for some place where the needs of army men who had made long journeys, or who were stranded at night without food or shelter could be attended to.
In 1907, Edith took her activism one step further, forming the Preston branch of a militant suffragette organisation, the Women's Social and Political Union . Edith was not shy about taking part in some of the more violent aspects of the fight for women's rights. In November 1933, Avice completed the third of her ‘firsts’ after becoming Alderman when she was elected as the first female Mayor of Preston.
"It tends not to emphasise what they actually contributed. With some of some of these women, that contribution is significant. We don't have a set target, but we but the current ratio is completely unrepresentative of the past- the ratio needs to improve."
