Winter comes with a higher risk of health issues, particularly for older people

According to the NHS, winter comes with a higher risk of health issues, particularly for older people or those with long-term conditions and compromised immune systems.

Some 162,931 patients waited 12 hours or more in A&E departments in England from a decision to admit to actually being admitted to an inpatient ward, a period known as the “trolley wait”. “How bad this winter will get is largely down to how likely it is that we see a spike in all three main respiratory diseases – Covid, RSV and flu – at once,” Professor Pagel said.

“Meanwhile, there is good news on the Covid front. The October peak is still coming down and while it might take off again this winter, its peak would likely be after both RSV and Flu, relieving potential NHS pressure,” Professor Pagel said. “At the moment then, things are not looking terrible for this winter. But I’ll be keeping an eye out for the November NHS stats and what the three respiratory diseases do over the next few weeks,” she said.

They are vital to protect those most vulnerable, and it is great to see RSV added to the list of available immunisations,” said Professor Griffin. “Flu vaccine uptake is higher than that for the Covid vaccine, but lower than this time last year for all groups except for pregnant women and toddlers. The more we can encourage vaccination each autumn, the better we can protect our population and the NHS each winter,” she said.
