The atmospheric Lancashire coastal village with a colourful ruggedness like no other
Envy is not the kind of feeling you want to be carrying around. But it is sometimes difficult to shift a little bit of an envious niggle, the kind that may well appear when you visit Bolton-le-Sands.
There's a cluster of villages, homesteads, hamlets and communities in the vicinity, with countless opportunity to stop and absorb the contrasting views and landscapes from naturally atmospheric and utterly engrossing to pretty and cute. You've got purple sheets of blooming flowers to rugged rocks and patterned sand dunes.
This fascinating realm of Lancashire somehow manages to be and feel remote yet is still relatively accessible from the A6 and the M6, with Lancaster a short four-mile drive away. The canalside village itself is worth a casual wander around, with two pubs including the Blue Archer, a duo of gorgeous churches, towpaths to stroll along and arched bridges to duck under.
