Big, high-profile splits perhaps seem like they should take ages. If you own multiple houses and you’ve got income from various different blockbusters coming in as royalties for the rest of your life, then sure, that might take a while. But I know from bitter personal experience that it is absolutely not just famous people’s divorces which take a long time. I – a normie with almost no assets – have been traversing the world of divorce since December 2022.
You would be forgiven for thinking, if you’d read anything I’ve written or posted in the last couple of years, that I am divorced. But in truth, I am not. I am very, verydivorced. In the next two months I’ll find out whether my divorce has been signed off by the courts., divorces – from application to final order –took about 63 weeks on average in the three months to the end of September 2024. That is up from 49 between April and June 2021. Kiren Dhillon from the law firm Nockolds told the paper: “While the case of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is at the extreme end of the scale, waiting more than a year for the final order to be granted by the UK courts is now standard. As well as the emotional stress this causes, it can add to the financial woes of couples at a time when their finances are most strained.” You have to give at least 29 days of notice to marry before your wedding. So it takes 29 days to get married, and an average of 63 weeks to become unmarried.– or how they put the breaks on your life – not least because by the time you actually start the clock on the legalities, you’ve probably already lost a significant amount of time trying to save the marriage.
