MPs voted 332 to 176 to pass the legislation carried within the Finance Bill
Labour’s controversial policy to introduce 20 per cent VAT on private schools cleared its first parliamentary hurdle despite calls from the sector for it to be delayed.
Independent schools have campaigned heavily against the policy, claiming it will force schools to close and cause an exodus of private school pupils due to fee increases, therefore flooding the state sector. This is likely to involve a separate debate on private schools VAT, giving MPs the chance to lay out their concerns and explain why changes should be made.
The challenge will be led by Lord David Pannick KC, one of the country’s leading barristers in cases related to government decisions. The exact fee rise will vary from school to school and institutions may decide to put their fees up gradually over the next few years.
