'A picture postcard village... steeped in history.'
A "picture postcard" village in south Northamptonshire has been voted one of the top ten destinations to visit in a recent national poll. A 200-year-old canal tunnel nearby was also included in the prestigious list.
The Canal and River Trust held the poll to celebrate its 10th anniversary of looking after Britain's waterways. The charity took over the management of 2,000 miles of canals from state-owned British Waterways in 2012.The poll described Stoke Bruerne as a "picture postcard village... steeped in history." The tiny picturesque village is seven miles south of Northampton and is home to just 373 people.
Blisworth Tunnel is almost two miles long and wide enough to allow two boats to pass, making it the longest wide, freely navigable tunnel in Europe. Connecting the north and south sections of the canal, it was completed in March 1805, making it older than the Battle of Trafalgar. The village and tunnel were joined by nine other "modern marvels". Amongst these were Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire, known as the "Cathedral of the Canals", which lifts boats 50ft from the River Weaver to the Trent & Mersey Canal.
