With a 14th-century church and fantastic folklore, Woodplumpton is the perfect place to visit in October - and it's just an hour from Manchester

A 14th Century Church, village stocks and a witch buried under a stone. No, that's not the opening line to a very poorly formed joke or the title of a children's novel.

Witches' punishment. Outside the church are the village stocks, complete with intricately carved side stones and wooden inserts. The right-hand stone brandishes a carving stating 'AB 73', presumably the initials of the mason and the date, with the century remaining a mystery. Woodplumpton's history doesn't merely add character to the village; it also proves beneficial for local enterprises. The Wheatsheaf pub, for instance, has entertained numerous patrons keen on visiting historic sites like Meg's Stone.

Victoria continued, "It's a good community. We have a lot of locals come in that are from the area and there are obviously a lot of new houses that are going up and they come up quite regularly. It is a locals' pub but we do get quite a lot of visitors that are passing through."
