Audrey Wearing spent half of her life fostering hundreds of children

Audrey Wearing MBE from, spent over 50 years of her life dedicated to fostering children. Her selflessness was honoured with the Member of the Order of the British Empire title in 2012.

Melanie told LancsLive: "Mum was 88 when she passed away and started fostering when I was a little baby, around 51 years ago, when she already had three kids. It's been said that she looked after around 200 children, but she worked with social services all over the place and really, it was more like 300 babies.

"He was sometimes away for weeks at a time, but would walk into a house filled with prams, kids and toys. We didn't have a lot of money but if mum wanted a new pram, she'd get one. She got everything she wanted." The owner of the Old Function Room, a pub in Darwen, was friends with one of the children that Audrey adopted in her life. They said: "She was such a strong and kind lady always having children coming and going, she treated them all with the love they deserved and having very little time for herself and her husband."Deborah Benmore, Leaving Care Service Manager, also paid tribute to the foster carer. She said: "I was the fostering team manager when Audrey received her MBE.
