Bangor and Bethesda were linked by a railway in the late 19th and 20th centuries
The challenging geography of Wales has always posed difficulties in linking communities or industrial sites. Such was the case when a passenger railway was planned to connect Bangor and Bethesda, supplementing the track that transported slate from Penrhyn quarry to Porth Penrhyn in Bangor.
Thomas Nelson and Co of Carlisle were commissioned to construct the route for the London and North Western Railway at an approximate cost of £70,000, reports North Wales Live. On March 2, 1883, a tragic accident occurred during the construction of the 297-yard tunnel when a 25-year-old man named Isaac Jones from Ceredigion died after detonating both of his legs while testing a piece of dynamite. On March 12, 1885, a 35-year-old worker named Roland Evans was killed by a fall of rock and brickwork following heavy rainfall.
UK blog Disused Railway Tunnels, which documents abandoned railway tunnels, notes that trains heading east from Tregarth Railway Station passed through two tunnels: "Trains heading east from Tregarth Railway Station would pass through the 27 yard Tregarth No.1 Tunnel before entering a vertically sided rock cutting which curves slightly to the south before entering the 297 yard Tregarth No.2 Tunnel which continues the curve for a short distance before straightening out.
