The Spanish Fort Police Department has launched it’s first-ever mental wellness program for officers.

Spanish Fort police officers will be required to attend at least one, one-hour counseling session per year. After that visit, officers can utilize the service as needed. The program comes at no cost to officers. It’s no secret that the job of a police officer is physically, mentally and emotionally taxing.

“There is still a stigma in law enforcement- you have a lot of Type A personalities here- a lot of the guys and girls feel like they are invincible. The mental health stigma is still part of that- they won’t go out there to seek mental health counseling or just to talk to somebody even though they should,” Chief Barber explained.

“You can go in there and talk about football, you can talk about politics- I don’t care,” said Chief Barber. “If you don’t need it, that’s a great thing but what I do believe in my department and a lot of departments need to see somebody but are too worried to walk through that door.

“I’m not saying a program would have caught that- but certainly, kind of highlights where we have a lot of responsibility- we’re out in the communities, we’re out there in stressful situations,” Chief Barber stated.
