Prominent political commentators were left blindsided when the Kamala Harris victory they were counting on did not eventuate.
The “Nostradamus” of US polling, Allan Lichtman, has his head in his hands, and his eyes dart back and forth as he looks at a sea of red.
Within minutes, Allan is rubbing his temples. “Oh, the democracy’s gone. Once democracy’s gone, it’s almost impossible to recover. “My message to all of you is never lose hope. Never stop fighting. Democracy is worth saving, and it will only be saved if we all fight for it,” Lichtman said.Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, however, did offer some answers as to how he got it so wrong, reasoning, “populism is surging”, and saying a vote for a Trump presidency was also a vote against something else.
Scaramucci noted he was initially on the record as backing California governor Gavin Newsom as a better presidential candidate, before he threw his endorsement behind Harris and “offered her my support”.“You get ownership of something, and then you get emotionally invested in it, and sometimes it takes away some levels of your objectivity.”UK host, former Downing Street communications director Alastair Campbell, called the panellists to reflect on what they got wrong.
