Residents have reported tyre tracks over graves, dilapidated graves left in dismay and memories thrown out in the name of the graveyard's maintenance.

A frequent visitor of Wilford Hill Crematorium for the past 30 years has been outraged by the "appalling" state in which Nottingham City Council has left the graveyard where his mother is buried.

Paul said: "I'm now 54, and my mum died when I was 20. I planted a tiny little bush. They tore it out and threw it away. My mum's graveyard is next to a big tree, and we contain it all. No one needs to come near it. Nottingham City Council has stated that it alerted all graveyard owners to inform them about the change in policy, which was first put in place in 2015, however the council started to enforce it in October 2024. Yet Paul argues that graveyard users are being punished without consultation, as he did not receive any correspondence stating that his items were to be removed.

"Because of this policy, they aren't even prepared to refund or apologise for taking these mementoes. I went yesterday and just saw that it was all gone. A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “We fully appreciate that this is a sensitive situation and we have been working with families for a number of years now and discussing options with them.
