A Californian architecture studio, Spiegel Aihara Workshop, has designed a charming Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) that cleverly takes inspiration from its neighboring primary residence, Void House. The ADU explores the potential of underleveraged spaces between a wall and a roof.
This Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a captivating example of contemporary urban design nestled in a cul-de-sac surrounded by oak trees. The Californian architecture studio Spiegel Aihara Workshop (SAW), known for its innovative projects like Void House, designed this charming space as a secondary residence. This ADU, situated across a courtyard from the existing Void House, is a testament to the potential of underleveraged spaces between simple architectural elements – a wall and a roof.
The architects initially explored replicating the existing single-family home on a smaller scale, but the construction process led them to question their approach. They delved into the impact of scale on domestic life, wondering how established forms would translate when reduced by a third. Challenges arose regarding roof pitch, daylighting, ventilation, and the relationship between the ADU and the primary house. The team sought to answer these questions through calculated design gestures, ensuring the ADU integrated seamlessly with Void House's existing aesthetic while exploring the possibilities of scaled-down living. The ADU's design showcases the interplay between scale and proportion. The ceiling, acting as a passage between the interior and exterior, sits at a height that interacts with tree canopies without clashing with nearby rooflines. The gable-style roof, a nod to the primary house, is repeated in a wave-like pattern, mimicking the fluidity of the living space while adding a unique geometric element. The interior, designed by Staci Malone Design, offers a contemporary aesthetic with a sleek fitted kitchen featuring a marble countertop, balanced by softer, natural materials throughout. This harmonious blend of modern and natural elements creates a welcoming and functional space
