The Wales’s have stepped outside the Palace walls in more ways than one
Sometimes a very few words can speak volumes. And this year, in an off-the-cuff remark, Prince William told us that he wants to carry out his royal duties “with a small r”. It’s a simple phrase, but it conveys a clear statement of how he intends to behave as heir and eventually Sovereign. And, afterWilliam’s attitude is a welcome move towards a more modern monarchy. He doesn’t enjoy all the flummery and fuss. He’s quite happy simply to shake hands and get on with the job.
Part of that perspective, I believe, is that the almost sacred concept of royal “duty” may not be quite so unshakeable as before. Must your job come before your family at all costs? That’s pretty much how the late Queen ran her life as monarch. But William and Catherine have shown that they intend to have a work/life balance. William in particular has taken some flak for ring-fencing school holidays as much as possible.
Sometimes they see their trendily bearded Dad setting off for work in jeans and trainers; he’s taken them to see Taylor Swift; and George has been at his side as he wildly cheers on his beloved Aston Villa. William can be quite cool — a charge that could never be levelled against his father, whose childhood largely revolved around nannies and nurseries. All of this augurs well for a future King George who is at least vaguely in touch with reality.
With his easy charm, imposing height and good looks, William is increasingly seen as an asset for the UK. And the Government is making good use of his soft power allure.
