It will be 28 years this Sunday since 35 people were murdered by a lone gunman at Port Arthur. The mass shooting shocked the nation and prompted then-prime minister John Howard to cast aside political risk to implement what were then considered controversial gun control laws. Years later, those reforms are no longer considered controversial; they are credited with saving many lives, and those who lamented the loss of freedoms at the time have largely fallen silent.
This year’s escalation of violence against women has distressed the community in a manner not dissimilar to the harrowing killings at Port Arthur. An emphatic response is required. If the killings are to stop and Australian women are to be safe in all areas of their lives, governments must be willing to explore stronger measures to mitigate the scourge of male violence.
Victoria has not been sitting idle. A spate of killings a decade ago led to the state establishing Australia’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence. It was completed in 2015, and the state government claims it has implemented all of the commission’s 277 recommendations to reduce family violence in the community. However, some of the ideas put forward by the royal commission for examination were later rejected by the government. The ongoing funding of other initiatives remains uncertain.
Men are using technology to circumvent protections such as intervention orders or communities to track down women online and physically, and police are often powerless to intervene.
