A burst main in Dolgarrog, Wales, has left over 40,000 homes without water. Repair crews worked tirelessly to fix the leak, which was located under a riverbed. Full service restoration is expected to take up to 48 hours.

Water company Dwr Cymru Welsh Water issued a warning that it could take several days to fully restore normal water service after a significant burst main left thousands without water. The company confirmed that the problem has been fixed and they are currently in the process of refilling the water network. The leak originated at the Bryn Cowlyd Water Treatment Works in Dolgarrog on Wednesday afternoon. Since then, over 40,000 homes have been affected, forcing businesses and schools to close.

Water supplies were gradually disrupted in large parts of Conwy, including the Conwy Valley and town, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Old Colwyn, and Llanfairfechan. To provide water to those impacted by the leak, water collection points have been set up, according to reports from NorthWalesLive. Repairing the burst main proved extremely challenging due to its location two and a half meters beneath a riverbed and the substantial volume of water flowing through it. Working around the clock, engineering teams implemented a coffer dam to divert the river. A coffer dam is an enclosed space within a body of water, where water is pumped out to expose the riverbed. Crews then utilized a trench box, a tool that enables the rapid and stable construction of a trench, to expose the leaking pipe. This allowed technicians to safely work on the damaged main.Dwr Cymru confirmed that the repair work has been successfully completed. However, they advised that it could take up to 48 hours for the water network to refill completely and for normal service to be fully restored. A spokesperson for Dwr Cymru stated, 'We can confirm that the repair work for the burst water main at our Bryn Cowlyd Water Treatment Works, Dolgarrog was completed at lunchtime. We are now refilling the network. 'Water supplies will still not be fully restored to all affected customers for up 48 hours. This is a high-pressure water main, and we are at a very precarious stage of the process. 'We need to refill the water main and wider water network very carefully to avoid further bursts. The network is nearly 900km long and includes 13 underground storage tanks, with our single biggest storage tank the size of 9 Olympic size swimming pools. 'Different communities within the network area will have their water supply restored at different times, as the network fills again. Discoloured water from your taps is normal after a supply interruption. 'This is usually temporary and disappears once the network settles. We also ask that customers check their taps to ensure that they are closed to help conserve supplies as we refill the network.
