Bread, pasta and rice are three of the most commonly consumed foods in the UK - but are regularly maligned as being bad for us, with their carbohydrate content often blamed

Bread, pasta, and rice are fundamental components of British diets, being essentials on our supermarket shelves and within our homes. Often vilified for their carbohydrate content and accused of being laden with "empty calories", these staples come under frequent scrutiny.

But Dr Federica Amati, chief nutritionist at health organisation Zoe, shared insights with The Sunday Times: "Carbs are not inherently fattening. But like any macronutrient that provides energy, when eaten in excess they can lead to weight gain as our body looks to store any excess energy for later."

While bread's reputation varies widely, its role as a fundamental, affordable, and convenient foodstuff means some types of bread are among the most mass-produced and ultra-processed items available — these are the pre-sliced loaves stocked on supermarket shelves.
