Westmorland and Furness Council has been asked to give extra funding to Hawkshead village
Passionate pleas have been made for extra funding to be given to a 'tired and run down' Lake District village with links to Beatrix Potter.
According to the report: “The village is scoring in the highest indices of rural deprivation nationally in terms of access to services and homes and is looking tired and run-down, needing more care and investment.”Hawkshead is located between Coniston Water and Windermere and is near to Esthwaite. The report describes the village as ‘majestic’ and says it has a ‘long and interesting history and heritage links to Beatrix Potter.
It also wants to encourage efforts to reopen closed down businesses in the area such as the post office, gallery and pubs. The Lake District National Park Authority has already contributed £1,000 to the creation of a new leaflet showing all the businesses in the area as well as new benches, cycle racks and seven short stay car parking racks.
