RANGERS playmaker Todd Cantwell has called on Scottish referees to start punishing “questionable” tackles earlier in games as he stepped up his preparations for the cinch Premiership match with Celtic at Ibrox this weekend.
However, the skilful forward, who has become something of a hate figure for Celtic supporters since moving to Glasgow from Norwich City in January last year, believes some of the treatment which he receives is excessive.The 26-year-old, who has scored five goals in his last 10 Premiership appearances, would like to see Scottish match officials laying down a marker early on in a match and showing they will not tolerate dirty play by giving out yellow cards to offenders.
“But it only works if it stops me and I don’t think it has. The injury I got was hamstring. Listen, it happens, it is part of“It is a compliment. It always has been. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been the player who gets tackled a lot. It is the way I play football, I know that. The manager has made it clear that he doesn’t want to change the way I play, but at times I can maybe be a little bit smarter and protect myself as well. That is another learning curve for me as well.
“The way that we play and the way that most teams in the league play is different. Most teams will try and drop off and set a boundary and say, ‘No, you are not coming into our box’. That is down to us to challenge. It is different sure.”
