Sid Gillman was a muse to Don Coryell; coaches Al Davis and Chuck Noll served under Gillman in San Diego
Firming its grip on the U.S. sports scene even amid a Summer Olympics, the NFL has cranked up its summer camp and announced the signings of several star quarterbacks ahead of a season that kicks off Sept. 5.
Coryell and his assistants, no longer privileged by USC’s cachet, wouldn’t be attracting many of the behemoths who could effect a “three yards and cloud of dust” style prevalent in the college game. They would have to find alternative ways to move the football. The football lab Gillman oversaw in San Diego evolved created a chess game that Cosell says makes for fascinating viewing to this day.
In San Diego, he built and oversaw teams that football experts said could’ve rivaled the top NFL teams of the era. Five of his first six AFL clubs won the West title. All told, his 11 squads combined for a .619 win rate. “So what he decided to do was to take Lincoln out of the backfield and line him up as a split receiver. No one was doing that. That was truly unique. So, in some ways, that was the true beginning of the three-wide receiver look, even though it was the fullback in Lincoln, but Lincoln was a really good receiver.”
