When it comes to chocolate, my tastes are resolutely cheap. Give me Cadbury over grand cru, Double Decker rather than 90 per cent dark, and Maltesers instead of pretty much anything.
Well, they're at it again, those dastardly chocolatiers. Not content with cutting 10 per cent of the weight of a Galaxy bar, and still charging the same price, they have now moved on to Easter eggs.
But when it comes to chocolate, my tastes are resolutely cheap. Give me Cadbury over grand cru, Double Decker rather than 90 per cent dark, and Maltesers instead of pretty much anything. Meaning the posh eggs have to be pretty special to impress. The Belgian milk chocolate is perfectly OK, with a decent depth and creaminess, while the honeycomb and pretzel add crunch, and a hint of salt. It looks a little different too, the eggs ridged with ripples. In fact, it could easily pass off as a more expensive product, which is, I suppose, the point. But very respectable all the same.Bitter...
This is the sort of egg that might have sounded, ur, eggcellent in the marketing meeting. But in reality, it's a dud.Wow! Showstopper by name, showstopper by nature. Seriously, this is a magnificent monolith of an egg, and so beautiful — shaped like a hive complete with its own yellow chocolate bees — that it almost seems a shame to devour it. This mighty marvel would provide a centrepiece for any Easter table, and weighing in at a kilo, could feed a family of ten.
This is a beauty. As you'd expect from Claridge's, that legendary London hotel. Wrapped in an Art Deco monochrome foil, and tied with a black ribbon, each egg is handmade by the hotel's pastry team from Valrhona milk chocolate, and is enough to convert me to the posh chocolate cause — rich, smooth and not oversweet. Inside, six hand-painted gulls' eggs filled with praline.
