The full council will vote on it later this month but councillors said they had no other 'realistic choice'

The Conservatives have regained Baxenden ward on Hyndburn Council despite a surge in the Reform UK vote which pushed Labour into third place. David Heap is the new councillor after yesterday’s poll caused by the death of sitting Labour Cllr Edward Blake in November after just six months in the job.

The result delighted Hyndburn Council’s Conservative opposition group leader Cllr Zak Khan. The by-election now means Labour have 21 councillors on the authority, the Conservatives 12, the Green Party one with one independent Cllr Joyce Plummer. A Reform UK spokesman said: “”Our growing success across the country is a clear sign that people are fed up with the two-party system, where self-interest takes priority over the will of the people. Our surge in the polls, soaring membership, and by-election successes are just the beginning.

"Congratulations to Councillor David Heap on his win. I pay tribute to our candidate Richard, who was well-liked, and we thank everyone involved for a respectful campaign." Reform UK Poised to Capitalize on Labour's Weakness, Mega-Poll RevealsReform UK Poised to Capitalize on Labour's Weakness, Mega-Poll RevealsA new mega-poll suggests that Labour could lose significantly more seats to Nigel Farage's Reform UK than to the Conservatives in a hypothetical general election. The analysis highlights a potential for Reform UK to win 76 new seats, primarily at Labour's expense. This alarming trend is attributed to Labour's slim lead and the possibility of a rise in Reform UK support or a decline in Labour's backing.
