that Government sources believed the Swiss model could apply to other aspects of the deal, there were concerns on the Tory benches that the Prime Minister could compromise on the UK’s independence from the EU.and reopened debates about the role of EU institutions in a post-Brexit Britain.
It is a member of the European Free Trade Association and was one of the EU’s largest trading partners in 2020 – alongside the UK, China and the US. Crucially, Switzerland is part of the freedom of movement agreement which allows EU citizens to travel, live and work within member states unrestricted – something Brexit-supporters are ardently against.
But, in order to adopt certain parts of the single market, Switzerland has also had to agree to various elements of EU law. Asked if he could support a Swiss-style relationship, he said: “Well, I didn’t support that. I want to maximise the opportunities that Brexit offers.”
