“If you cut out second employment, you end up with the worst kind of MP – career politicians – and nobody wants that,” one senior Tory backbencher toldHe argued that second jobs also helped to keep down the drama in politics, adding: “In the old days, most MPs had other jobs, so they couldn’t spend their time plotting and scheming because they had to think about their second job until they turned up in Parliament.
